Hey Carlos - happy new year!

I am working on a project with FPP and some Mentor HQ Trees. I haven't really use the trees with FPP before and was testing with a few trees of medium to high res and it was working okay. Now I added a bunch of the higher res trees (maybe 16 or 20) and now my Max file is over 3GB when saved. Why is the file size so big if FPP isn't actually loading the geometry till render time?

Is this normal or perhaps there is something amiss with my scene?

Thanks /b

The tree geometry is stored by default in the scene, you can see them as normal 3dsmax objects hidden in the forest_templates layer. Normally these objects should cleaned when they are unused, however you can check if there is some huge geometry there loading your scene.

To prevent to load so much your scene files, you can convert these templates to XRef's and configure the library browser to create new objects on this way. You can change the default behaviour on the Library Browser-> File -> Preferences, and set import mode as XRef as seen on the attached image.

In any case, if your scenes are really big and you can't find the reason, try to create a new clean scene and merge all items from the old one, sometimes this gives surprising results.

Thanks Daniel

I didn't realize the base meshes were actually present in the scene - and I have used some of the very high-res Mentor plants, so that is where the size must be coming from.

Thanks for explaining it.
