Ralph Eggers created this atmospheric image of a medieval street on a foggy February morning. The image is a historical recreation so Ralph aimed to create a realistic impression of the kind of surfaces and materials found in such a setting, as well as some of the ways architectural elements of timber and masonry would be combined at this time.
The image was created with 3ds Max, ZBrush, Substance Designer/Painter and Phoenix FD (for the smoke) and rendered with V-Ray.
I used Forest Pack Pro to scatter all the details on the road surface (gravel, leaves, twigs, grasses) and Railclone for the distribution of all the roof tiles and shingles. This was especially important because of the viewing angle and the scattered light - Railclone helped me to create varied and believable roof surfaces that don't look too flat or uniform.
